With the full-scale rollout of Japan’s cigarette vending machine age-verification system just around the corner, a Sankei Sports news reporter has confirmed the existence of a minor flaw: magazine photos can be used to fool the age-verification cameras on some machines.

The Train That Doesn’t Stop

Here’s an innovative concept: a train that doesn’t stop to pick people up at a station. I do wonder what happens when a lot of people want to leave the train at a certain station or what happens when a lot of people want to get on the train at once. Still, an interesting concept.

Preview of World's First Rotating Skyscraper

PlusPreview of World's First Rotating SkyscraperPreview of World's First Rotating SkyscraperThe Associated PressArchitect Dr. David Fisher unveiled the Dynamic Tower, the world's first building in motion. The rotate skyscrapers, which are planned worldwide, have floors which rotate independently to create a building that constantly changes shape. (June 24)Is it the skyscraper of the future? Or just a "pie in the sky" idea? Italian architect David Fisher unveiled in New York the design for what he's calling the world's first "building in motion." It's an 80-story residential tower with revolving floors, ostensibly set for construction in Dubai this fall. ((David Fisher, Architect)) "It's the first building that is dynamic, changing its' shape. You can adjust the shape any given moment." Fisher says he is also slated to build one of the "dynamic" buildings in Moscow, and, he hopes, New York City. He says the buildings also double as power generators: wind turbines on every floor will provide power. "Wind has a very negative affect on skyscrapers we all know. So I say 'why do we want to fight the wind?' Why don't we use the wind, to our own benefit? The Dubai condos are going for three-thousand dollars a square foot. Lifts will allow penthouse residents to park their cars right in their apartments. Fisher says the building parts will be prefabricated in a factory in Italy then assembled at the final location. The architect says he'd like to have the Dubai building ready to live in by 2010. Ted Shaffrey, The Associated Press, New York Author:

Dumped husband Ian Usher puts his life on eBay to leave Australia

Yesterday afternoon Ian Usher got his first sense of how much his life might be worth.

Bidding on the life that Mr Usher, 44, from Darlington, Co Durham, had built for himself in Western Australia began at midday local time on eBay, the online auction site. There was a starting price of one Australian dollar for his three-bedroom house in Perth, his car, his motorbike, his adventure sports equipment, his circle of friends and his job in a rug shop.

Mr Usher told The Times: “It is a fairly brutal process, but I was more excited about it than nervous.”

By 3pm the bidding had passed Aus$400,000 (£190,000). A few hours later nearly 100 bidders had entered the race and the price had reached Aus$1.8million.

MTV - Media And Music In Asia

MTV Asia shows us how young Asians are using media. Social networks seem to take up a big chunk of their time when they are online. Other trends that keep popping up are ‘content explosion’, ‘spoilt for choice’ and ‘multi-tasking’.

What’s Next In Media

Neil Perkin made a great presentation on where media is today and where he thinks it is heading. I especially like his advice in slide 55: “Accept uncertainty: Be flexible, Experiment more, Embrace failure”. I think this is the first and biggest step for companies/people to take.

The Price of Publicity

The One Times Square building is empty. Why? Because the owner can afford it by selling ad space alone. It costs $300,000/month to advertise on that structure -- one of things you'll learn in this behind-the-LED-screens look at Times Square.

After YouTube’s integrated video advertising, they just added another cool feature: Annotations. It allows you to add text and links to your YouTube videos. Really cool. Here’s an interactive card trick which shows you what that looks like. I included a ‘how to’ video to help you get started. Feel free to mail me your results after adding annotations to some of your own videos.

flash game World of Warcraft parody

It's a World of Warcraft screenshot, right? Well, no -- it's a screenshot from WTF?!, a Flash-based sidescroller parodying WoW. And it's note-perfect, too -- every interface element and the backgrounds and characters look like they're ripped straight from Azeroth.
The gameplay is pretty similar, too, for all that this is a sidescroller -- the same tedious level-grind, based on the same sort of tedious quests ("go kill seven sheep"). But the satirical way it treats that level-grind is priceless, a telling commentary on the common tropes of the MMO. The quests get increasingly weird -- your newbie quest giver asks you to go cast a spell on sheep that have been transformed by the evil mage Karl Marx into communist brain-slaves to restore them to their rightful ovine form, and then tells you to go kill Marx himself. But Marx shows you that your previous quest-giver is simply a tool of capitalist oppression, and becomes your new quest giver. Sigmund Freud also makes an appearance.
